Justice Department Secures Guilty Plea in Case of Threat Against Colorado Secretary of State

A Nebraska man has pleaded guilty to threatening violence against Colorado secretary of state Jena Griswold.

Travis Ford of Lincoln, Neb. posted numerous threats against Griswold on the Instagram social media app.

“Do you feel safe?,” Ford posted, according to documents filed in federal court in Denver. “You shouldn’t. Do you think Soros will/can protect you?”

He also wrote that Griswold’s security team could not protect her. “Your security detail is far too thin and incompetent to protect you,” Ford wrote. “This world is unpredictable these days….anything can happen to anyone.”

Cole Finnegan, U.S. attorney in Colorado, said that individuals making threats should not count on Internet to conceal their identity. “If you make online threats of violence, do not count on remaining anonymous,” he said.

Ford will be sentenced Oct. 6. He faces up to two years in a federal prison.

His guilty plea is the first obtained by an election security task force established by the Justice Department in July 2021.

FBI offices in Denver and Omaha investigated the case.
